Testimonial from Maheshwari

I am Maheswari Marimuthu, working for a well known corporate in Bangalore.I sincerely wanted to open my hands for the people who have lost their life's for different reasons, who really struggle for their daily survival, who have runaway from home due to abuse, poverty or pressure. Mainly children and the elderly.

As a result of my search,i got to know about "Feed The Nation"(FTN). I am so glad that me and my friend Bhuvaneswari were able to participate in an event that was conducted recently at "New Hope Children's Home" a home for homeless children.

Most of us have everything but fail to be happy in a way looking for better things in life, but the kids of those 60 numbers in that home are well bonded and share their love irrespective of the places they have born, the languages they speak. We were around 15 people participated the event and i believe we were at least be able to bring the smile on those faces that day.

It has been a very moving experience and a life affirming one. My humble appreciation for the wonderful work that the entire team of FEED THE NATION is doing. Very inspiring.

VISIT TO NEW HOPE CHILDRENS HOME - May 8, 2011

How often have we seen a child throwing tantrums for the latest gizmos, or the younger ones crying their hearts out for a triple sundae at popular hang outs like Baskin Robbins or McDonalds? And here we are about 20 strong, members of Feed The Nation, on a bright sunny weekend with 60 children of the same age who are deprived of parental care and a proper home.

Forget Sundae and Gizmos, these kids won’t even be able to choose an outfit or a meal of their liking, for once, in their life time and despite the fact that deep down in their minds they know that they are all alone they still sport a hearty smile…

Have you ever thought of

a childhood without the support of a family and home? Having to rely on complete strangers for basic upbringing… But how can we truly imagine such a life, when most of us have this luxury called parents, providing us with everything we need without any delay, always there for you when you are low…

At an age when they were supposed to be choosing an outfit of the latest fashion, they are out there on the streets struggling with ways to fill their hungry stomach. The disregard shown, to a kid who lost their parents, by his or her relatives and the society leaves a deep impact on their minds at this tender age itself, which leads him or her to go astray…

Fortunately there are some kind hands, who lift these children from dire straits to a safe haven, educate, counsel and prepare them for a secure future… this is what we saw at New Hope

Childrens Home & Nithya Jyothi E & D Trust. They work tirelessly to give 60 odd children a chance in life which they deserve, by teaching them proper etiquette and giving them good education by sending them to the best possible English medium school and shaping them to face the world.

Though life has dealt a raw deal to these children and they lost glitter

in their eyes, they do quickly pick up lines from the latest bollywood flicks and sing it out loud... The spirit of these children are so high that the songs sung by them only echoed in our ears as “Get ready World, here we come!”

Aakashaparavagal-Birds of the Air

Imagine going out on an outing with your family, getting lost, and not being able to get back home because your memory has shut down and you simply cant remember where you live? Think it only happens to children? The 80-odd members of “Aakashaparavagal”- a home for the mentally disturbed bear ample testimony to the fact that it can happen to adults too.

Picked up from the streets; hungry, hurt, uncared for, more often than not bearing marks of their ill-treatment at the hands of the so called “normal” people, these children of a lesser god are transformed into child-like beings at the hands of the volunteers at this center near Jalahalli.

A few snapshots of the home:

A bright red children’s cycle-interesting in its sheer incongruity in its surroundings. It belongs to a little boy; the only child amongst adults. Will he grow up with scars on his psyche from being in the middle of the inmates who are recovering from illnesses of the mind? Or, will he grow up full of love, compassion and understanding for people who are different from him?

The 100-watt smile of Shaju Chettan: The smile never wavers. His can’t be an easy life. What is it that makes him so strong and willing to serve mankind-taking care of the truly lost ones? Bringing people off the streets and trying, sometimes to no avail, to bring them back to some semblance of normalcy using every avenue available to him. Being able to live the doctrine “As God provides for the birds of the air, he will provide for this home and its inmates” (hence the name!!). Living with his family (a wife and the little boy-proud owner of the red bicycle) in the midst of the inmates who can turn dangerous at any point, it takes courage of a rare kind to continue to do what he does so well.

A neat dining hall: At one point, full of inmates who sat at tables patiently awaiting their lunch. Surprisingly calm and quiet. Except for squabbles that arose when one stole some chicken from another’s plate. And also a sudden cry from a lonely man crying out his anguish and wanting to be back with his family and familiar faces.

A dwarf-completely normal and belonging to the Gemini circus. Left behind at a hospital in K.R Puram due to his lung problems-all his money gone in its treatment. Uncaring relatives and having nowhere to go, he has found his way to this center too.

Leaving the center one image lingers. That of the inmates-all freshly bathed and spruced up to face the day-sitting in the warm sunlight on the fenced in terrace-happy with the simple things in life!!

Swanthana - Haven of Little Angels

If you have a heart, it will bleed once you read the first few lines.

The Just born ammu was thrown in the waste bin behind a hotel one night. By next morning, she was almost eaten up by stray dogs and crows. Fortunately for her she was rescued. But due to that ordeal, she is paralyzed waist down.

There is one girl who was dumped in the waste bin in a railway station. She was rescued but acute malnutrition had left her mentally and physically disabled.

Another girl was hit by an iron rod by her dad as he was trying to hit her mom. The kid who was healthy is now mentally and physically disabled and has been abandoned by her parents.

These were the sights we saw at Swanthana, an orphanage for Mentally and physically challenged girl children.

Words cannot describe the agony we, the members of Feed the Nation went through watching these kids, holding them and trying to make them smile.

A lot of new members had joined us for the visit. Our Project Coordinator, Vineeth had done a pilot visit to ascertain the requirements. They needed Clothes, Diapers as all kids attend the natures call as is, and food. Mails were circulated to members to arrange for these needs. Apart from this our new member Rubina had arranged lunch for all the inmates and FTN members.

Being the Republic day, the Nuns had arranged for flag hoisting. We had nothing much to do to entertain the kids than carrying them around, and moving them around in their wheel chairs. The kids’ happiness was over whelming. They wanted to move around, and the moment anyone was taken back to the building, we could hear the screams to go out again.

It was an appealing sight. The privilege each of us enjoy to be able to do what we want, in knowing what we are doing. And here is a bunch of kids, at the mercy of others for no fault of theirs. Their only fault is probably that they survived their birth, and sadly were born to selfish and heartless parents, who left them to the mercy of the world, so that they may live a peaceful life. I'm very sure they wouldn’t have slept a single night peacefully, after the day they decided to dump their bundle of joy into a waste bin, for the stray dogs to feast on her.

The home is run amazingly well. The Nuns led by Sis Regina , takes extremely good care of the kids. They hardly have any external support, and hence are not able to accommodate more kids. The facility now has 29 kids and they are willing to take more needy kids, but are short of space. They are looking forward for a big time sponsor to build some extra rooms for them. On a day to day basis, they need clothes, diapers, food, toys etc for the kids. We want to associate with them long time on these needs.

As we parted, most of us had very heavy hearts. As I shared this with my friends, many came forward to provide more help. Most of us cannot take away our minds of that little ammu who captured our thoughts.

My Daughter, Anandita summed it up later that evening, when she told me “ Lets go there again daddy, ammu was so happy when she was with us” .

We would be going there soon, may be for Ammu's 1st birthday which is in february.

Karunalaya - A tribute to parenthood

My parents mean the world to me. I don’t believe in a super power. To me the biggest power above me is my parents. There is nothing bigger or important than them.

The reason I decided to work in Palakkad, my hometown when Kavi was carrying ammu, was that when Ammu is born, our parents would be there to take care of her. She would get those values which only a grand parent can give her. We stayed there till ammu was two and a half years old. She learned more on respect and care in those years, than I can ever teach her.

It hurts me every time I read about parents being abandoned their own children. I always wondered, how can some one do it to his own parents??? Those who put sweat and blood together to bring us up???

When I joined Feed The Nation, we discussed on what we would do?

I suggested, we should visit an old age destitute home. The inspiration was from an experience we had some time back at a destitute home..This was called Karunalaya in Cochin. Kavitha, was doing her MSW and had a project visit there. She wanted me to go along on a later visit. What I saw was heart breaking. Old people, all abandoned by their kids are waiting for an early death. That was really tragic. Most of them were found in streets in fatal conditions. They were treated and many had come back to normalcy, still many were in critical condition. The feeling of loneliness, separated from families, not been shown to their grand children ; that was what was killing them...

Many of them belonged to affluent families and their kids were also well off. But they were not taken care of. They showed absolutely no hatred towards their children. Infact most of them were defending their kids. The facility was run by nuns, and they took care of those old people as their own parents. It was tough as many were not mentally stable..When I spoke to them, what they told me took me aback. They wanted no money. They wanted no clothes. All they wanted from us was to spend some time with them every week or once a month. They were missing their kids.

That’s why I suggested destitute home.. You would at least feel less guilty...

We decided to go to Karunyalaya in Bommanahalli, Bangalore.

It was ammu’s birthday and mine too …( we are separated by a day : 15th and 16th March )
The mother superior has permitted us to host the dinner for the inmates on the 16th March. There were 11 inmates and 14 others in the facility.

The entire FTN team was there. They had organized everything for Ammu. A beautiful cake, balloons and celebrations. We spend time sitting with the old inmates, just listening to them as they told us their stories. How happy they were and how they reached here. It touched us beyond what we felt it would.

Ammu cut the cake and after the birthday celebrations, we served them dinner. Simple as it was, they enjoyed it. Did I see tears in few eyes?? I don’t know. But they were touched. Ammu also was serving, and that probably added to their happiness.
We had bought new clothes to all of them. They took it from Ammu as if their grand daughter was gifting them a new dress.

When it was time, there were a lot of happy souls. They all would have had very painful memories, I’m sure. But our presence and care would have given them a night of peaceful sleep.

It was wonderful to be with those elderly ladies...

I feel ammu also carried home some good blessings from them and some lessons on care and respect..

Love Your Parents, cos you dont get a second chance .

Akashaparavagal Visit on 6th July and 20th July 2008

Well friends...at the first visit from outside to the ashram it looked like as if we have come to a friends house or something.... but when we actually went inside the ashram the situation totally changed and no words to express the pathetic condition seen over there...some of them don’t want to see anyone while some others are eagerly waiting for someone to give them a handshake or a hug...some of them are even waiting for getting out of there and flow freely outside but really they cant because of the condition they are in....really it hurt me a lot by thinking my own situation and friends time has come to rethink on it and just do some thing for these people who are really loving and who did not receive any love in their life.....

my dear friends start thinking on it and working on it as they don’t have any support from the outside world. Lets be the first team to help them and make them free flying birds and give them the proper nest they would like to be in......

"BE PROUD TO FEED AND DON'T FEEL SHY IN DOING SO"

Written by…Jijin Das

I was lost for words when I reached there..firstly there was a death of one of the inmates a real young person and then by the sheer number of people who are being taken cared of within the limited space and infrastructure.

Hats off to all of them for caring them with utmost care and dedication and smiles all around with absolutely no cribbing as they firmly believe in an ultimate goal which needs to be achieved (to make India a place free from street dwellers)...

We may have just visited and given a contribution but it takes a lot physically, mentally and emotionally to actually "do" it and be in the center of action..I will no doubt be visiting them again and urge FTN also to be an active participant in their efforts to make this world a more beautiful and equal place for one and for all...

I am really proud of associating myself with this young, dynamic and energetic lot of people and thank you FTN for making me break free from my fancy dream world!!!

We went there ....we saw them...and there are absolutely no words to express what came over us....for a moment...i felt that i was actually born with a silver spoon....when i saw the less privileged...is there so much misery in here????what an illogical question right?....we all know there is a lot of pain and suffering in here...but how many has actually seen it???forget seeing...how many of us have actually even thought abt it???...today's visit changed my perspective about how we look at people...the happiness that embraced those faces when a smile...a small gesture of love ....a caring touch...was the only gift we had for them today..... there should be more visits ....more planned ones...where we can extend actual help to the intimates.....be it in any form.....i hope we can keep few words in mind.....world is just a stage...and we are all actors.....lets just do our part wel....mayb thats y the creator made us more privileged than others...............cheers everyone!

Feed The Nation Visit - Tejaswini Seva Trust

The monthly FTN visit for June 2008 was chosen at Tejaswini Seva Trust, a home for abandoned children situated about 6 KM from Banshankari, Bangalore. As we left the city roads and entered the muddy by-lanes of Chikkakallasandra, we were greeted into a green colored 3-storey building constructed on a 30*40 square feet of land.

The FTN team of about 20 members reached the venue by about 10:30 AM and we were like immediately taken aback by the space constraint and infrastructure limitations of the building which houses about 45 children of various age groups and difficulties. The founder Mr. Srinivasa Murthy does a commendable job in managing the place really well in spite of all these difficulties and makes sure that the children there enjoys everything what he\she deserves in life. After getting an introduction of all the people there, FTN distributed sweets as an ice-breaker and even before we could realize it, we began to mingle and felt at ease with each and everyone. Next we decide to test the creativity quotient of the children and what better way to check it than to give a coloring set and paper to
everyone. And boy were we taken for a surprise as they let out their creative juices flowing and came up with some real good images which could have been easily mistaken to be the work of a professional artist. Even we couldn’t resist such an opportunity and almost every member pitched in to help the children, but we have to admit that we were no match for their skill and eye for detail.

For the three children who were unable to see colors in their life, we decided to cheer them up with our anthakshari skills with some songs, which were totally out of tune. And that’s when Manjunath and Subbu kicked in with their singing and drumming skills to amaze us all. Subbu in spite of his handicap in vision is pursuing his graduation in music. Now that’s what I call determination and I am sure almost everyone who had come with FTN that day would have surely changed their though process and outlook in life after seeing and interacting with them for the short span of time. However everybody’s attraction of the day was the cute and naughty Aishwarya who never had to sit down as she changed hands from one member to the other. On the contrary who can forget the shy Susmita who never comes to anyone?

As the painting competition drew to a close it was almost time for lunch and FTN treated them to a tasty and sumptuous lunch and topped it with payasam and fruits. All this food was too much to handle for some of the members as almost everyone felt like sleeping. But “Sleep can wait” exclaimed one amongst us, and so we decided to conduct the singing and dance competition for anyone who wanted to showcase their talents and even the two maids in charge of the looking after the children also joined in the competition as well. Some FTN members volunteered to judge the competition and tally the final marks and it was a real tough race to the top with neck and neck competition. The Prizes, certificates and trophies were handed out to the winners by our President and the children felt like on “top of the world” after their accomplishment.

It was almost evening by the time everything concluded and to top it all we gifted the children a cricket kit as a token of our appreciation and for making our day a lovely and wonderful experience. Even Mother Nature joined in the fun with rain pouring as we stepped out of the building to leave. As we travelled back on the dusty road leaving the green building behind, a mixed bag of emotions filled all our hearts; HAPPY that we made a difference in their life at least for a day, SAD that the day came to an end all of a sudden and HOPEFUL that we would be returning again soon.

Manoj says...What a time we had...I thought my heart was a lot lighter by the time we came out,,,

Soumy said..."I missed half of the program, still I was very happy to be with them.thanks for FTN to giving this opportunity."

Afdal says..."I completely agree with u guys...........the day was awesome.......each and every single moment we shared with them are precious.....I cant explain the feeling in words...."

Surya to say..."No words.. It was so great to be part of the event.
and thanks to all for the participant... for making event great and successfull.. "

April 6th 2008 aint another common day for FTN! - Contd...

Afternoon we visited Mukthi

Venue : Mukthi
Date : 6th April 2008
Time : 3.00 PM

This is an awesome place with 11 elderly inmates. All the lady inmates are homeless and helpless. Menon sir is the only male inmate, who lived there on his own expenses and also taking care of some of the official works of Mukthi. Recently we heard from Mukthi that Menon sir started living with his son again. That’s great news, but the remaining inmates? Are they going to get a home again? Are they going to get new relations again? Is there someone out there to spent time and money for them?

Yes, even a little time spent there make a big difference to them and no matter whatever designations we are in today, we cant predict how life turns out or worns out in a single day. So people be thankful for the lavish lives we have today and be nice to the needy. If not money, give some soothing words. Only people who are longing for care and affection, knows the value of relationships.

One of the inmates is a Kalamandalam Dance Teacher called Devakiamma. She was a proud single mother, because she lost his hubby at a young age and raised his only son with her earnings. Overnight she lost her only son and her grandson in an accident and she was left all alone, because her daughter-in-law cant take her along with her, due to some financial and family difficulties at her place. She is in her early sixties and she still remembers all the madras of mohiniattam :)
And she is not only a good singer; she is a good composer too. She sang a song for us about the moon, written by her. It was an elite and versatile one. All she need is jus a little bit of care and attention. All she need is someone who can communicate with her in her mother tongue.

Wake up guys................... I know its

Tough for all of us to spare one-day outta

our weekends, but atleast update us about

your availability, so that we can make the

events of FTN much better.....................................

A simple smile can change someone’s life, so people keep smiling; we might not know when we made a difference in other's lives.

April 6th 2008 aint another common day!

Because our FTN team visited two places Om Ashram and Mukthi

Lemme scribble down our wonderful experience with the inmates of Om Ashram and Mukthi

Forenoon we visited Om Ashram

Venue : Om Ashram
Date : 06th April 2008
Time : 11.30 AM

This place has got 14 to 15 inmates. Four of them are pretty old, one lady turned 99 this Monday and another one was 88 yrs old. But at this place, most of the inmate’s are paying for their ailments and medicines. Here they get personal care with ailments at a cheaper price and the inmates are mostly old people, who need to be under supervision all the time.

If you know someone who is financially weak or mentally retarded or left alone, this is the correct place in Bangalore we can approach for help, coz this is run by a private trustee.
They even take in charge of bed-ridden patience’s and they have regular health check ups for the inmates and there is a Dr who visits these inmates on a daily basis.

Silent moments:

We met a lady here, who is extremely well dressed and sounded pretty normal at first and we were wondering what is she doing here. The irony is, her hubby left her and she don’t know exactly wats her past or where she belongs to. She just knows someone visits her and she has a vague memory of the past. She got jittery when he left her and then onwards she simply smiles all the time or else cries for no reason. Aint we need to pick a lesson from this lady?

God has given us senses to smile, when required and to empathize when needed! Are we doing it? Look at this lady, she cant differentiate between happy or odd moments in life. Aren’t we extremely blessed ones? Hw are we going to make difference in such people's lives?

When we hugged her and Vijesh spoke something to her in Kannada she was extremely happy and while we were about to leave, she said, "am happy, feel like seeing u people again"

Continued our visit to OMASHRAM

So people, who missed this wonderful moment, try to join us for our next venture. Ah yes, the most awaited moment, lunch with them. And after that we left from Karunalaya with lots of joy.
